...how it all began

The very beginning of student big band initiative dates into fall 2011. When the bunch of around ten amateur musicians started playing jazz and swing music, nobody expected them to hold on to it more than half a year. Nowadays, at the beginning of academic school year 2013/2014 the TULBand has over twenty active members, professional leadership, own rehearsal room in Harcov and rich repertoire of over thirty swing, jazz, rock and latin hits and growing.

Let’s now take a little step back to history. The idea of student or university band is not new at all – not only that every major western university have one (same as the sports teams), but also in Liberec student bands were existent in the past. Contemporary Technical University was missing this kind of ensemble though. Musical students coming here had no opportunity to continue playing and so they either turned elsewhere or put their hobbies and their instrument to sleep.

Therefore the principal mission of the TULBand is to create a background and opportunity for (not only) students who want to continue playing and performing music during their „TUL career“ and to keep them inspired and stimulated by valuable feedback in order to continue their musical progress and improve and develop their skills of interpretation, coordination and teamwork that can easily be utilized in other segments of their professional live.

This commitment brings the responsibility of systematic work that combines the progressive improvement with fun and relax in the way the favorite hobby should bring. This all almost by the way result in the ensemble of growing level and skills. Therefore the contemporary TULBand is capable of representing the university on the level of respectable amateur ensemble, which was shown for example during the celebrations of sixty years anniversary of foundation of TUL.

Band composed of students, graduates and employees of Technical University in Liberec successfully performed during spring Majáles celebration, Economical faculty celebrations and other occasions. It is composed solely of amateur musicians led by the only professional providing the mentioned feedback.
